Well, we finally watched the notorious bettie page. pretty good movie. definitely not one to watch wiht kids as there is nudity. it's just amazing that they stired up so much controversy with their pictures that are so tame compared to what there is on the internet now.
and today we took my car to get brakes. $250 gone. I really hate that public transportation is so inconvenient in this town. so i took boy to the movies as thanks for helping me pay for brakes and dealing with the guys. We went to go see borat, because he was really wanting to. i will admit i did laugh, but i did not like the movie. I understand the concept, let's make fun of everyone, but that type of humor falls flat to me now. a few years ago i would have found this movie amazingly hilarious, but like south park, i found most of the jokes taken too far for shock value and it just bothers me for the sheer laziness ofthe joke. i'm more impressed by comedies that make the joke, but with some subtlety. there is nothing subtle about borat, or the 2 naked men wrestling. the kids from south Carolina state were not funny to me because i had experienced first hand actual university of south carolina idiots myself. yes, i know not everyone from south Carolina or USC are COCKS, but in reality, the hats do not usually lie. (ignore the weird dude, i had trouble finding a cock hat, and this was the only one i could find quickly)
so it has been a while since i wrote about the movies we have rented form netflix.
i think i have to write about:
- kiss kiss bang bang - this movie will not change your life, but it should entertain you. it's the bumbling leading hte bumbling. wonderful performances by robert downey, jr.. and val kilmer. i can't remember who the girl is, but she was great as well. it is a murder mystery set amongst actresses and actors and private detectives. everyone has an angle. it was very cute the way it was narrated as well. the choppy cuts and camera angles were gimmicky, but tolerable. if the movie was any longer or trying to be serious, the choppy camera and weird filters would have been annoying. i would watch this movie again. one of my highest compliments.
- neverwhere - this was a bbc miniseries. neil gaiman wrote a novel that he based off of this series where he fleshed out some back story and changed things that he felt didn't work inthe miniseries. all in all a good show for a small budget. quite a dark cautionary tale. be careful what you wish for, and sometimes things are exactly how they sound. i recommend reading hte book. boy didn't know the story, and was a bit lost and got tired of me explaining it to him. if you read the book first, it's kind of nice to see how they made it. the little bits where neil gaiman does commentary are nice as well.
- oldboy - this was a very dark, violent, and disturbing sexually, Korean movie. i didn't really like it. i think i didn't like it because i don't know the culture. i've seen many Japanese and Chinese movies, but this was my first Korean i think. the strong culture divide made some of the character's choices very confusing to me. the violence was fairly graphic. i can see why people liked it and gave it good reviews, i just had trouble stomaching the subject matter and identifing with the main guy. i'll give this a "i didn't hate it" vote.
- the concert for george - george harrison. boy loves george. i'm ok with george, but not a fangirl. it was a neat concert and the filmography was nice, but it is really a long music video with a lot of sitar action. again, i didn't hate it, but i don't need to see it for a long while. we watched it twice. the music is nice, but i get bored watching concerts. i have trouble paying attention to all of austin city limits. i generall have to break it into 2 sittings.
- dune 1984 version - the spice must flow. seriously, this movie wigged me out when i was little. it hasn't aged well at all. it's still entertaining in a "this is baaaaaaaad" way. that and i love kyle, so i'll watch it for him. the sci-fi channel treatment from a few years ago was pretty good.
- my neighbor totoro - i love the damn catbus. this movie is great. i have added all of hayao miyazaki's movies to my netflix queue. this story is a bit strange, a family moves to a country house and has some tree spirits as neighbors. the damn totoro is cute, but the catbus is awesome. if you ever see a catbus plush somewhere, buy it for me, PLEASE!!! i really want to find the music to this movie, it's quite excellent
i have rented neverwhere. it's quite amusing and fun to watch. it's very low budget and very british. i am glad i have read the book several times as there is a bit of implied stuff that he fleshed out more in the book. boy doesn't likeit too much, but i love it. i must make hte disclaimer that i am a neil gaiman fangirl.
alrighty then, we have recently watched kinsey and the squid and the whale. apparently we had a laura linney weekend 2 weekends ago. i jusy forgot to post my reviews.
kinsey wasn't so much about sex as it was about relationships and obsession. i'm not really sure howi would deal with my husband deciding to study sex and being so open about it. there were a lot of words, andit was a good mvie to watch. i was amazed at the characters ability to accept difficult socially unaccpetable things and try to be tolerant. they also displayed character blindspots, like kinsey not being able to relate to his son at all just like his dad couldn't relate to him. i did enjoy it even if the subject made me a little uncomfortable.
the door in the floor was incomfortable and comfortable all at the same time. i'm lucky in that my parents are still together. i do rememebr this time period and a lot of my friends were dealing with divorce. it's very interesting fromthe kids perspectives. my brother.
we have attempted to watch waking life. wow, i didn't realize the whole movie was rotoscoped, i thought it was dream sequences intersperced. i guess i had no idea what the movie was about at all befor ei rented it. i think it has potential, if i don't get sick watchign it. we couldn't hear all of hte words above the neighbors and dishwasher so we turned it off. it seems to be a really wordy philosphical movie that you have to be in the mood for. we will try it again soon.
tomorrow we should have kiss kiss bang bang. someoen at work was telling me it was a good movie. i can't remember anything else about it right now.
ok, vox is way cool in that my last post, with the 102 movies that is mostly links, i just copied that from the suntimes page and vox kept the links. this is a wonderous feature. i just expected it to be all text, but the linkage is a fabulous bonus.
if you want to add yourself as a friend on my netflix queue, my email is amazingly enough vampiress at gmail dot com.
poor riffic is stuck watching my indie/foreign movies. i never used to like foreign flicks until my friends in charlottte, joe and kim, started dragging me to "the manor" which is charlottes anser to the art house. i went along for something to do and hated every movie. at somepoint i realized that even if i didn't like the movies, i did like the experience of watching a non-hollywood movie. it's really hard to explain, i'm a very harsh critic, my friends says that a glowing review from me is "well, i didn't hate it" at first subtitles really irritated me. finally we saw "run lola run" which really opened my eyes. that was a fantastic movie with subtitles. well shot, great characters. i've watched it countless times since. so, i've realized that even hating movies can still be a good time.
it's kind of like my inuyasha habit, i don't really like the show, yet i keep watching, i want to understand why it's so popular with my friends.
we recently joined netflix. i'm loving it.
movies we rented so far, in no real order of importance
- hotel rwanda - liked - this is not a happy movie and is very graphic. that being said, the acting, scenery, characters were amazing. i remember this time, i wa sin highschool. i remember the debates about getting involved and the cnn news footage. it breaks my heart that people can value a life so low. i just can't fathom hating someone that much to partcipate in such violence. i have no idea what i would do if a civil war broke out in my backyard, but i hope i would be as nobel as these people.
- crash - meh - i get it, these are stereotypes, thanks for bashing me over hte head with it. i don't understand the critical acclaim, the acting was great, but the story and characters were unrewarding. the good people do bad things and the bad people do good things. i didn't feel that anyone character really deserved my time or interest.
- a long engagement - liked - not quite amelie but definetly enjoyable. very long indeed, but the cinematography was brilliant.
- layer cake - loved - this was my second time, and i stilll jumped at some of the scenes. a pretty well played out crime world who screws who last flick. that and hte future james bond is fairly easy onthe eyes, and seriously colm meany. seriously.
- brokeback mountain -didn't hate but didn't finish - good acting, brilliant cinematography, very long and drawn out. i'd give it another chance sometime, i just wasnt int he mood for the really slow, lack of dialogue movie.
- wallace and grommit curse of the were rabbit - loved - very cute and well animated. i like the style and the very british humour.
- aeon flux - guilty pleasure - yes this movie sucked, but it was also entertaining. seriously who doesn't like hot chicks with cool toys tangling with hot guys. mmmm i just can't get enough of johnny lee miller.
- march of the penguins - loved - i love penguins. a good love story really, these peguins make such an arduous journey to have children. it's very slamonesque except salmon do not film as cute.
- the door in the floor - didn't hate - really it's uncomfortable characters having uncomfortable sex. i wish there was a bit more going on. the ending jsut kind of sucked for me. it was good and had some good dialogue and acting, but the story was missing somthign i just can't quite put my finger on.
- kinsey - not viewed yet -
- syriana - didn't finish, made me sick - i do not need to watch torture scenes when i am suffering from a sever respiratory infection, fever, and ear ache. reminded me too much of the way traffic was filmed, very choppy and gritty looking. just not my style.
- y tu mama tambien - liked -
- nausicca of the valley of the wind - liked -
- the squid and the whale - not viewed yet -
- waking life - not viewed yet -
i'll add reviews slowly as i seem to keep crashing firefox.
