movie review time
we recently joined netflix. i'm loving it.
movies we rented so far, in no real order of importance
- hotel rwanda - liked - this is not a happy movie and is very graphic. that being said, the acting, scenery, characters were amazing. i remember this time, i wa sin highschool. i remember the debates about getting involved and the cnn news footage. it breaks my heart that people can value a life so low. i just can't fathom hating someone that much to partcipate in such violence. i have no idea what i would do if a civil war broke out in my backyard, but i hope i would be as nobel as these people.
- crash - meh - i get it, these are stereotypes, thanks for bashing me over hte head with it. i don't understand the critical acclaim, the acting was great, but the story and characters were unrewarding. the good people do bad things and the bad people do good things. i didn't feel that anyone character really deserved my time or interest.
- a long engagement - liked - not quite amelie but definetly enjoyable. very long indeed, but the cinematography was brilliant.
- layer cake - loved - this was my second time, and i stilll jumped at some of the scenes. a pretty well played out crime world who screws who last flick. that and hte future james bond is fairly easy onthe eyes, and seriously colm meany. seriously.
- brokeback mountain -didn't hate but didn't finish - good acting, brilliant cinematography, very long and drawn out. i'd give it another chance sometime, i just wasnt int he mood for the really slow, lack of dialogue movie.
- wallace and grommit curse of the were rabbit - loved - very cute and well animated. i like the style and the very british humour.
- aeon flux - guilty pleasure - yes this movie sucked, but it was also entertaining. seriously who doesn't like hot chicks with cool toys tangling with hot guys. mmmm i just can't get enough of johnny lee miller.
- march of the penguins - loved - i love penguins. a good love story really, these peguins make such an arduous journey to have children. it's very slamonesque except salmon do not film as cute.
- the door in the floor - didn't hate - really it's uncomfortable characters having uncomfortable sex. i wish there was a bit more going on. the ending jsut kind of sucked for me. it was good and had some good dialogue and acting, but the story was missing somthign i just can't quite put my finger on.
- kinsey - not viewed yet -
- syriana - didn't finish, made me sick - i do not need to watch torture scenes when i am suffering from a sever respiratory infection, fever, and ear ache. reminded me too much of the way traffic was filmed, very choppy and gritty looking. just not my style.
- y tu mama tambien - liked -
- nausicca of the valley of the wind - liked -
- the squid and the whale - not viewed yet -
- waking life - not viewed yet -
i'll add reviews slowly as i seem to keep crashing firefox.

Watch The Squid and the Whale immediately. Grotesquely funny and some of the most interesting characters I have seen in film.
thanks for the recommendation, i'll go watch it right now :)
KINSEY! I loved it even though some of it was so weird. You should definitely see it. :)
i think kinsey is next. we've had it the longest and i like liam, i just haven't been inth e mood for it, but maybe that's becaus ei thnk it's going to be an uncomfortable movie, just because kinsey's findings were so socially uncomfortable.
the squid and the whale had so much language. i love characters with such a command of language. it does lend itself to s slightly strange universe, it wasn't quite a wes anderson universe but close. you can definetly see wes' influence. it was so weird, but very well portrayed from the kids perspective. anna paquin needs to stop playing english writing sex kittens (25th hour) but she works so well in small characters like this.
i'm lucky in that i never had to deal with divorce, but i had many friends who did, so i could identify with some of the children's reactions because i was that age during that time period.
Yes! kinsey is uncomfortable, even for me... i'm pretty open in general about sex. you'll be surprised.
i've never heard of the squid and the whale. i think i'll rent it.
Gotta agree with you on Brokeback Mountain. I love the story but found it almost to quick from thing to another. The movie followed the story exactly and yet ended up drawn out and long, go figure. Wonderfully done movie but it's definitely a long one.
In Brokeback I was facinated with the contrast between the amount of time elapsed compared to the slow methodical pace of the movie. This gave me time follow the evolution of the relationship from start to finish without feeling rushed or forced along. And I would be curious to see the script because the amount of words(dialogue) per minute was incredibly low. I loved the movie but probably not one that I feel the need to watch again soon.
